Renato Carmo – ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa []

RCarmoResearch Fellow at CIES-IUL and Assistant Professor at the University Institute of Lisbon (ICSTE-IUL). He graduated with a degree in Sociology from New University of Lisbon (UNL) in 1993, obtained a MA in Sociology in 1997 (UNL), and a PhD in Sociology in 2006 from Institute of Social Sciences (ICS-UL). His research revolves around social and spatial inequality, rural and urban studies, social capital, mobility, and public policies. Since obtaining his PhD, he has received 4 scientific awards: the ISCTE-IUL prizes for one of the best international articles published in 2010 and 2014; award to the best article in the field of regional studies published in Portuguese journals in 2008 (Portuguese Association for Regional Development, APDR); and special Prize of the Jury 2009 for the best article published in the journal Análise Social by a young researcher.   

Since 1997, he has taught in several master and doctoral programs in sociology at three different Portuguese universities and the National University of East Timor. He is a founder and deputy director of a recently founded scientific publishing house called Mundos Sociais. He’s been scientific reviewer in several international journals such as Cities; Urban Studies; Population, Space and Place; European Planning Studies; Landscape and Geodiversity.

He is also one of the founders and coordinators of the Observatório das Desigualdades (Observatory of inequalities) and founding member of the executive council of the European Inequality Watch network, which consists of seven institutions, including the OD, from different countries.
